Waste management
The management of waste has changed greatly in recent years mainly due to developments in European and national law. Challenging targets have been set for local authorities and this heavily influences any waste management strategy that is to be adopted. Therefore, CWG has developed a Waste Strategy in line with current targets, which outline plans to reduce waste growth and improve management of the waste which is produced.
Current Recycling in Canary Wharf
Building and Estate Waste - CWML
CWML manages all the waste from the Canary Wharf estate infrastructure (roads, parks etc) and also all the waste generated from the tenants, who occupy the buildings, managed by CWML.
Working with the main contractor responsible for waste throughout the estate, CWML is focused on driving recycling levels higher and is already considerably exceeding the established Government targets.
The main principles that drive the recycling and waste management across the estate are:
- To reduce the amount of waste wherever possible.
- To minimise the waste sent to Landfill by recovering as much material as possible for recycling.
Construction Waste - CWCL
Canary Wharf Contractors Ltd have operated programmes during the last major construction projects to minimise the impact on the environment and to reduce the waste diverted to landfill through on-site segregation of the main waste streams and further off-site segregation at the waste transfer stations. In the past an average recycling figure of approx. 70% has been achieved for construction waste.
Further improvements and more stringent Environmental Management Systems have since been implemented like e.g. the development of a draft project specific Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP).
The SWMP aims to reduce the production of waste to a minimum, to re-use or recycle waste where practicable and to promote best practice within the projects.
Newspaper Recycling Scheme
In November 2006, a recycling scheme for newspapers on the Wharf was introduced. A significant opportunity was identified for the recycling of newspapers throughout the Wharf and a dedicated environmentally friendly electric vehicle was purchased in order to collect these from various pick-up points.
Newspaper recycling crates have also been placed throughout the malls in order to encourage further newspaper recycling.
In the first week of this scheme being introduced a ton of newspaper was collected for recycling.
We currently collect over 5 tonnes a month of newspaper for recycling.
