Transport

The Group has always considered transport a major factor in sustainable development. Consequently, each November we participate in a cordon survey of the local area and Canary Wharf, which measures all movements into or through the area. To complement this, every two years we commission a survey of the transport arrangements of people travelling to and from Canary Wharf.

The 2007 survey was carried out in June/July, as in previous surveys. Some 90,000 employees now work at Canary Wharf (June 2007) compared with 73,000 employees in 2005, 53,000 in 2003, 40,000 in 2001, 25,000 in 1999 and 15,000 in 1997. Over this 10 year period, Canary Wharf employment has been increasing on average at 20% per annum compared with a London average of 1.65% per annum.

Some businesses distributed a self-completion questionnaire on paper while others arranged for staff to complete the questionnaire via the internet. Employees were asked to describe how and when they travelled to work, where they lived and a number of other transport related characteristics. 10,951 valid survey responses were received – this equates to about 12% of all employees at Canary Wharf. There is a 19 out of 20 probability that the results for all employees are within +/-1%. This means that where a proportion of, for example, 50% is indicated, we can be reasonably sure that the true answer lies between 49% and 51%.

Canary Wharf Group mode of transport statistics

3.5% (1.8% in 2005) of employees walk to work at Canary Wharf. This figure has almost doubled since 2005 and equates to about 3,160 employees per day walking to work. 2.9% (1.8% in 2005) cycle to work, a 60% increase from 2005. This equates to about 2,620 cyclists per day. A further 1.5% (1.1% in 2005) ride a motorcycle. Riverbus services are used by 1.0% (1.0%in 2005) of employees – about 900 people.

Cycling

There are 2137 cycle parking spaces on the Estate. Of these 812 are in buildings around the Estate, 920 are public, with 420 of these secure spaces in Canada Square Car Park. The Group encourages its own staff to look at cycling as a means of transport to and from work, and Participates in the Government’s Green Transport Plan through Evans Cycles Ride2work Programme.

For enquiries relating to cycle parking please contact the Car Park Office on 020 7418 2752.
