People interested in being more environmentally-friendly are encouraged to head for Canary Wharf on 2 and 3 October.
London’s iconic business and shopping district is hosting the eighth annual Green Canary Day, with a range of free activities and stands encouraging eco-aware practices in the workplace, home and community.
Highlights include a team of falcons roving the Canary Wharf skyline to deter pigeons and ‘plastic bag-free days,’ with reusable cotton Green Canary Day bags being given to shoppers throughout the retail malls. Over thirty organisations will be running activities and exhibiting green products and services on each of the two days.
Canary Wharf Group Company Secretary John Garwood said: “Canary Wharf is well known as a thriving business district and we are also striving to become one of the UK’s best examples of environmental regeneration.
“Canary Wharf Group has an important role to play in bringing local people and companies together to encourage sustainable practices. Green Canary Day helps do this and makes being green fun, especially for youngsters,” he said.
Canary Wharf Group was named one of the Sunday Times 60 Best Green Companies in the UK in 2009, and achieved 80.2% of its environmental and social targets in 2008, as independently verified by Bureau Veritas.

Canary Wharf Group scooped some of the top awards at the Mayor of London’s Green500 and Better Building Partnership Awards last Thursday, 11 June.
The organisation received the Green500 Platinum award for its carbon reduction efforts; a commendation in the Green500 ‘Engager’ awards for green learning, skills and communication amongst staff, Canary Wharf-based companies and the local community; and a Better Building Partnership Gold Award for carbon performance in 2008.
Other estate occupiers recognised for their work at the awards were HSBC, Trinity Mirror and Tubelines.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “I salute London's top organisations for truly grasping the nettle to become greener. Their sterling work to cut carbon and become energy efficient puts London on the front foot to emerge from the economic downturn stronger and stimulate new jobs.”
The first ever Green500 and Better Buildings Partnership Awards were hosted at Chelsea Football Club. Both programmes are funded by the London Development Agency to help deliver the Mayor’s target to cut London’s emissions by 60 per cent by 2025, create green collar jobs and stimulate a low carbon economy. Together, over the last year, their 200 members saved 117,000 tonnes of carbon, equivalent to taking 100 double decker buses off London’s streets.

CWG was judged the second most environmentally-friendly property developer in the UK and placed 30 out of the 60 companies on the list from all business sectors. It is the first time the Group as a whole has received the accolade, although in 2008 Canary Wharf Contractors Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of CWG, was named on the inaugural list.
George Iacobescu, Chief Executive at Canary Wharf Group said: “Canary Wharf is one of Europe’s busiest business districts with nearly 100,000 workers. Given the anticipated growth in the next few years, we have had to think carefully about managing the diverse range of activity here in a sustainable way.
“We are delighted to see our efforts to lessen environmental impacts rewarded. We’ll continue to work with all our stakeholders, including Canary Wharf-based companies, to make an even bigger difference in the coming years,” he said.
The Awards programme included an independent staff survey on environmental performance, which found that eight out of 10 CWG employees ‘think green’ on a regular basis. The Group scored highly on efforts to encourage recycling, reduce energy use in buildings and use waterways rather than roads for transport.
Richard Caseby, Managing Editor of The Sunday Times, said: “The 60 companies in this survey are all pioneers – enterprising, enlightened and fizzing with new ideas. All have a common sense of purpose about their corporate social responsibility.
“There may be plenty of environmental awards but this is the first that has both a robust methodology to measure environmental performance and a survey of each company’s staff to find out whether the green sheen is more than skin-deep,” he said.

Two Canary Wharf Group building projects have won bronze awards from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
The Pan Peninsula scheme at 1 Millharbour, managed on behalf of developer Ballymore Properties Limited by Canary Wharf Contractors Limited (CWCL), and the 20 and 25 Churchill Place project on the Canary Wharf Estate both won bronze awards at a recent Awards dinner.
The Considerate Constructors Scheme is designed to improve the image of construction through better management and presentation of sites, over and above the statutory requirements.
Measures to lessen environmental impact, including a comprehensive traffic management scheme at the Churchill Place project, were among the aspects highly commended by the Considerate Constructors’ site monitor. These included using waterways to transport materials and an innovative web-booking scheme for deliveries to reduce road congestion. Both of the projects achieved a materials recycling rate of over 80% and used local suppliers where possible.
To earn a Considerate Constructors Award, building sites have to achieve a score of 95%+ in four quarterly audits on criteria such as environmental friendliness, safety, consideration and being a good neighbour. Of the 6,500 eligible sites throughout the UK, only 7.5% won an award in 2008.
CWCL was also recently named as one of the Sunday Times 50 Best Green Companies in the UK.
Cormac MacCrann, Executive Director of Construction at CWCL said:
“Given the wide range and sheer volume of activity taking place on the Canary Wharf Estate and surrounding areas, it is particularly important for Canary Wharf Contractors to lessen the impact on the environment, minimise disruption to our neighbours and ensure the welfare of people working on our sites.”
“We are extremely pleased to see our efforts recognised in this way, and will continue to work towards the highest standards to protect the environment, minimise disturbance to the local community and keep our people safe.”
Norman Reed, Chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme said:
“The winners are not just those receiving the Awards; they include the site’s neighbours and workforce, as well as the environment, and all those who benefit from the superb standards displayed by the winning constructors.”

Canary Wharf Contractors Limited (CWCL)) has been named in The Sunday Times 50 Best Green Companies in the UK list. Announced in a supplement of the newspaper yesterday (18 May), competition for places in this inaugural list was fierce and the quality of entries very high. Only those organisations that demonstrated the highest environmental standards, with workforces wholly engaged and in tune with their green initiatives made it onto the list.
The Sunday Times is confident that its survey will become the industry benchmark for environmental performance allied to worker engagement in the future.
Richard Caseby, Managing Editor at The Sunday Times, said, “It takes confidence and ambition to get involved in the first year of any enterprise. All participating companies distinguished themselves in this regard.”
George Iacobescu, CEO of Canary Wharf Group of which CWCL is a subsidiary, said, “It is great to be recognised and rewarded for our efforts in this area. CWG is constantly working towards improving our environmental and social credentials which is evident in the environmentally cutting edge buildings we are constructing and the local community initiatives we are implementing. We see these ventures as long term investments towards the sustainable future of our company as well as the local area.”
CWG’s Environmental Report 2007 will be launched at the end of May and will be available online at www.greencanarywharf.com.
