Canary Wharf Environmental Management System

Throughout the development of the Canary Wharf Estate consideration for the environment has been a high priority.

With such a diverse range of impacts on the environment actions to minimise adverse impact and to enhance the positive contribution has required the implementation of a robust and comprehensive environmental management system.

Although documentation can never replace dedication and the application of common sense an effective management system can focus attention on those objectives and targets where improvements and actions are required.

The formal management system was established in 2002 using the framework provided in the international standard ISO 14001:1996. From the outset the system has been established to cover Canary Wharf Group activities throughout the Estate and includes interactions with the local community.

Environmental Management certification was achieved with British Standards Institution in February 2005.

We have received 2 visits per year from BSI since the initial registration and maintained certification through the revision to ISO 14001 in 2004.

Environmental management has been an inherent part of construction on all projects since 2002 and has included Building Research Establishment and Considerate Constructors schemes where we have received ‘excellent’ ratings.

The documented management system continues to support all aspects of construction and building management on the Estate and now includes a Biodiversity Plan and Waste Management Strategy.

Group environmental performance is reported each year in the annual Environmental and Social Report with performance statistics independently verified by Bureau Veritas.

Additionally the Group takes part in The Environment Index which benchmarks companies against both their sector peers and all companies which have participated in the Index, on the basis of their environmental management and performance in key impact areas. This is a voluntary undertaking and helps us to analyse gaps, measure progress, drive improvement and raise awareness of the environment as a strategic, competitive issue at board level.
