Green Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf Group plc (‘Group’) is a distinctive, integrated property development, investment and management group of companies, focused on the design, construction, leasing and management of Grade A office space and high-quality retail and leisure facilities on the 35-hectare Canary Wharf Estate and more recently, elsewhere in London. Canary Wharf is unique in the way it has been created, due to the fact that the Group oversees all projects at every stage, from planning and initial design to development, construction and management. This enables us to give every consideration to ensure that the highest-quality buildings are created. It also means that we can assess the environmental issues involved and act upon them resulting in a more all-encompassing approach to sustainable development and the environment.
The Group have been putting in place new systems during the planning and construction stages of our new buildings. We are aiming for BREEAM ratings of ‘Excellent’ on all new developments and are working closely with new tenants to achieve their environmental targets. We are proud to be a founder member of the UK Green Building Council, which champions sustainable building design.
Our Environmental Management System has been restructured to better align internal management resources and thus enable us to improve on previous performance and demonstrate the importance we place upon environmental issues throughout the Group. We work closely with existing tenants in addressing environmental issues and putting in place new systems for managing the Estate.
The Estate has a number of green spaces both at ground level and in the form of Green Roofs. These, coupled with the docks surrounding the Estate attract various species of plants, birds, fish and animals. In 2004 we created our own Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). This was created to integrate with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Biodiversity Action Plan. Since then it has been revised to incorporate targets on the UK and London Biodiversity Action Plans, as well as reflecting the growth of species inhabiting the Estate. Our aim is to create a habitat attractive to the occupants and users of the Estate.
