Biodiversity

Since 2004 the Group have produced a Biodiversity Action Plan. This has been revised to reflect the changes to the Estate and also the changes in species numbers and protection status.

We have formed partnerships with outside agencies and specialists for advice and support in making changes to encourage a diverse range of species to the Estate and to protect indigenous species already present.

One of our aims is to encourage people involvement with tenants, visitors and the local Community. We will be liaising with tenants who have their own Biodiversity Plans or aims, and with other tenants via events such as the annual Green Canary Day. Involvement with the local community and schools through surveys, habitat construction and nature trails will be implemented.

Several species of bird have been seen on the Estate. Past surveys have identified Black Redstarts, Swifts, House Sparrows, and Peregrine Falcons amongst other bird types visiting or nesting on or around the Estate. In the docks there are freshwater and saltwater species of fish as well as marine birds such as Canada Geese, Herons and Swans. Foxes, Grey Squirrels and Rabbits have also been sighted on the Estate in recent years.

Canary Wharf Estate has the highest concentration of Green Roofs in the UK. They are situated on the roofs of One Westferry Circus, One Churchill Place, Cabot Place East, 10 The South Colonnade, and on the Waitrose building at the east end of Canada Square Park. Canada Square Park, Westferry Circus and Jubilee Park are intensive green roofs. A 3 year survey of the roof on 10 The South Colonnade was recently completed by The Royal Holloway College London.
